College Application Information

If you are applying early action or early decision your deadline is most likely NOVEMBER 1. This means that your transcript request and other information WAS due to your counselor on OCTOBER 1. If you have not given this information to your counselor you need to do so as soon as possible!

The NOVA Pathway Applications are due no later than November 4. The NOVA Pathway program is a wonderful program if you are planning to go to NOVA and then transfer to a four year school. Because the NOVA Pathway program is risk-free -- you can decide not to attend and there is no cost or penalty involved it is a great back up for students who may not be accepted to their first choice school and for students who may be concerned about financing their education.

I would also like to invite you a College Application Party in the Career Center on November 8, the Tuesday teacher workday, from 10:30 am-1:00 pm. Bring your college applications, college essays or scholarship applications and questions to the Career Center and we will start the process together. Pizza will be served.

Are you wondering what college will cost you? Effective October 30, each college in the country will be required to have a NET COST CALCULATOR displayed on their website.

What is a NET COST CALCULATOR?

It is a computer program which displays the cost of attendance at a given university and then supplies prompts which students and/or their parents complete. Based on the answers to these prompts it will provide you with your net cost of attending the college. Some colleges have their calculators up and running, some are not yet online. This is a very valuable tool, and can be a reality check for many students.

ADMISSION TYPES

I have recently received some questions about the difference between Early Action and Early Decision.

Early Action- Apply early, usually have to submit application by November 1, though some schools have a November 15 date. You receive your reply sometime between December 15 and January 30. You are not required to accept your admission and place a deposit until May 1. All Early action applicants are notified on or about the same date.

This is helpful for students who have not decided on a college and is helpful for students who will rely on financial aid because they can review all acceptances and your financial aid awards before making their final decision.

Early Decision- Applications are due Early- Usually November 1, but some schools have Early Decision II which have later due dates. Early Decision is BINDING- This means that you are notified early, but if you are accepted you agree to attend. Early Decision is only for students who have a strong preference for one school and who are fully committed to attending that school. It does not give the student the opportunity to evaluate different financial aid awards. All Early Decision Applicants are notified on or about the same date.

Regular Decision- Applicant must apply by a given date, often January 1, but sometimes as late as March 1, depending on the college, all applicants are notified on or about the same date, usually around April 1. All accepted students who are planning to attend must submit their deposits by May1.

Rolling Admissions- These colleges accept applications between September 1 and sometime in spring. They make their decisions on a rolling basis. Often students may learn the decision 2-3 weeks after they have submitted their application. One year a student heard she had been admitted to a Rolling Admission college the second week of school. She had submitted many additional applications, but she knew she was accepted at one school very early in her senior year. Rolling decisions are mailed out frequently through the application cycle. If you have been accepted to via Rolling admission you have until May 1 to deposit.

Raiders Crew Team Selling Wreaths, Poinsettias and Coffee!

Every year, the JEB Stuart Crew Team sells wreathes and poinsettias to raise money to support the team. We sell fresh Maine balsam pine wreathes, decorated with a festive red bow, pine cones and red berries shipped to us from Down East Maine. Our poinsettias, sold in partnership with Meadows Farms, come in 7” diameter containers that are wrapped in foil and a cellophane sleeve to minimize any damage prior to delivery of the plant. We sell both red and white poinsettias that are so fresh, that in some instances, they will retain their blooms well into the spring!

Last year, we added coffee to our fundraiser options. Sold in partnership with Beanetics of Annandale, this coffee is fresh roasted and comes in 1 lb. bags and they make a great gift idea. All items ordered are delivered to your home by Stuart Crew team members, on Saturday 3^rd December. What could be easier!

This is the Stuart Crew team’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Our team receives no support from the school or Fairfax County, relying solely on donations, membership fees and our fundraising efforts. To some of you this is the beginning of the high school experience and for the class of 2012 this is the beginning of the end of your high school career. Either way the Parent, Teacher, Student Association (PTSA) wishes you a good year.

The PTSA holds its meetings on the third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m.. These meetings are open to all parents’ teachers and students.

Parents may ask why should I attend the PTA meetings? I have so many other commitments related to my student…..crew, chorus, drama, booster meetings, etc.

I would invite you to come to a PTSA meeting to have a more well rounded experience at JEB Stuart High School for you and your student. The PTSA is where information about Stuart is shared and discussed. The PTSA provides an opportunity for all of us to look at the school as one community not just in our separate groups or activities.

Teachers may ask “Why should I attend the PTA meetings?” I spend over 40 hours a week at work why should I volunteer for more.

A very good question - everyone is stretched at work these days and I appreciate that but I hope we can entice teachers to come to the meetings and participate. We want your opinions on issues. Your presence would allow us to have all parties present for discussions.

Students: “ OFGS a PTSA meeting are you kidding!!!”

Seriously we want to hear from students as well as parents, administration and teachers. JEB Stuart High school is here for you and we would like to know what you think about issues. Issues discussed at PTSA meetings directly affect you so please come be a part of the PTSA and the Stuart community.

News from the Career Center

We had a busy September, with a highly successful Junior/Senior Parent night on Wednesday September 14 and the Senior Career Units the following week.

Remember, if you have questions about your senior’s college search or college applications please make an appointment with his or her Counselor and/or Mrs. Kelley. We also want to encourage parents the Family Connection program. Students and parents can access a great deal of valuable information by logging in to the program. Login for both students and parents is through their FCPS 24/7 (Blackboard) account. One caveat, although parents can access family connection, they cannot register for a college visit on their account. Only students are allowed to register for college visits during family connection.

Why register? If your child is interested in a college it is important to have him or her attend a college visit. Many colleges track demonstrated interest and attending one of these admissions visits is a way for your child to show interest in the school.

Did you know that FCPS rules require parents of students requesting a transcript to complete and sign a Transcript Release Authorization form before any transcript can be sent to the college? This is required for all students, even those over the age of 18. This form was part of the Senior Packet which and was picked up in the summer envelopes. Please make sure your Authorization is complete and on file in the Student Services office as soon as possible.

Standardized Tests - For seniors, we will offer the SAT at Stuart on Saturday November 5. Students need to register by October 7, if they want to pay with a fee waiver. Students registering after October 7 must pay full price and will also have to pay a late charge; for more information and to register go to http://www.collegeboard.com/ . Students can take the ACT at Stuart on December 10 and must register for that test on November 4; go to http://www.actstudent.org/ to register. Students on Free and Reduced Lunch should see their counselor to obtain a fee waiver. Please note: the Stuart school code (CEEB Code) for both the SAT and the ACT is: 470-797.

PSAT - On Wednesday October 12, all freshmen, sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT at Stuart during the school day. FCPS pays for all sophomores to take the test but freshman and juniors who want to receive their tests score reports must pay a fee of $17.00. Students will be able to pay for the test in the Career Center during lunch on October 5th, and 6th. The PSAT is also the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship program. Please note that the program rules require payment be made before the test administration. If your child’s check is still in his or her backpack on October 12 the test cannot be scored and your child will not participate in the National Merit scholarship search. We ask that checks be made payable to JEB Stuart High School, and we would appreciate it if you would put your child’s name and grade on the memo line. Please Note : Registration for PSAT is at school but registration for other tests is online.

College Fair/College Night - On October 16, and 17 FCPS will sponsor a College Fair at the Fair Oaks Mall and College Night at Hayfield Secondary School, this is a great place for Sophomores and Juniors to start their college exploration. This year students are asked to register online and take a copy of their registration confirmation to the event. Faculty College Fair - On October 21st we will also have our third annual Faculty College Fair. Held during all three lunches this allows students to chat with teachers about their colleges and experiences.

Parent Coffees - The Career Center and Office of Student Services has planned two parent coffees for the month of October, one for junior and senior parents on Friday, October 21 at 7:30 am, and one on Friday, October 28, at 7:30 am for sophomore and freshman parents. We hope you will be able to join us for these informal events.

Volleyball Kicks Off Districts with 13-1 Record

The Raiders varsity volleyball team is having a record-breaking season. The team kicked off the season by finishing first in the Park View Jamboree and then turned around in early August to take first place in their own Raider Rumble Invitational beating such teams as Oakton, Jefferson and Westfield to earn the title. With a current record of 13-1, the team will kick off National district competition on Monday, October 3 against Yorktown. On Wednesday, October 5 the team will host West Potomac high school in a DIG PINK match to raise money and bring awareness to breast cancer survivors and victims. We encourage our fans to wear pink and come out and cheer the team to victory.
